Introduction to Vibration Diagnostics Using Case Studies

There are many techniques available for diagnosing probable root-cause of vibration that adversely affect the reliability of an asset, including time waveform and frequency analysis, natural frequency testing, experimental modal analysis (EMA), operating deflection shape (ODS), vibration video amplification (VVA), finite element analysis (FEA), and experimental stress analysis (ESA). This presentation starts with an introduction to time waveform and frequency spectral analysis, using several case studies to illustrate the diagnosis of a vibration problem solely by these methods. Case histories are then introduced wherein the root-cause cannot be ascertained by only time waveform and frequency spectra. These cases require additional analysis techniques. A brief introduction to modal testing and operating deflection shape analysis is presented, after which these techniques are applied to several of the case studies to resolve the root-cause of the vibration problem. The finite element method is a numerical technique that is suited to perform analysis of complex structural-mechanical systems. A finite element model is typically much more detailed than an experimental model. A brief introduction to the FEA method is presented, after which this technique is applied to several of the case studies to resolve the root-cause of the vibration problem. After an introduction to vibration video amplification and experimental stress analysis, these techniques, in addition to several of the others are applied to case studies to resolve the root-cause of the vibration problem.
